Ash Shaykh Abdul Hameed al Hajooree was asked:

Question:

“Some of them now have started to use different verses and narrations to prove that the coronavirus has been mentioned in the Qur’an.

From that which they use is Surah Ad Dukhan, them saying that Allah says,

‘Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke’ [44:10]

And the narration that this smoke will be for the believers like a cold until the end of the narration.

They also say the next verse mentions this smoke will cover all of the people and this virus has spread to the world.

Please advise us”

Answer:

“That which has been mentioned that the Coronavirus has been mentioned in the noble Qur’an, whether that be in Surah Dukhan

فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِينٍ

‘Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke’ [44:10]

or Surah Mudathir all of it is from false interpretation and speaking upon Allah without any knowledge. The smoke is a great sign which will come at the end of time and this is not its time [for it to have come].

Similarly, Surah Al Mudathir’s verses are exposing the responses of the disbelievers regarding the fire and similar to that.

They took these texts and used it for the Coronavirus. It is obligatory in regards to Tafseer of the noble Quran to return to that which the pious predecessors explained, may Allah be pleased with them.

[As for] this virus, then it is a disease from the different diseases, which the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said regarding,

‘Indecencies are not spread among a people except Allah will trial them sicknesses and diseases which were not known to their ancestors’

This is the reality of it. Adultery, homosexuality, interest, oppression, and other than that have become widespread among the people. We call upon everyone to repent to Allah. Increase from making Dua and seeking forgiveness. Perhaps Allah by His bounties and generosity will make easy to find a cure for this trial, this plague. We ask Allah to raise it and get rid of it.” End. [Reference]
