Ash-Shaykh Bin Baaz, rahimahullah, said:

وضعه على محل مرتفع أفضل مثل الكرسي أو الرف في الجدار ونحو ذلك مما يكون مرفوعاً به عن الأرض، وإن وضعه على الأرض للحاجة لا لقصد الامتهان على أرض طاهرة بسبب الحاجة لذلك ككونه يصلي وليس عنده محل مرتفع أو أراد السجود للتلاوة فلا حرج في ذلك إن شاء الله، ولا أعلم بأساً في ذلك

“Placing it [the Quran] upon an elevated surface is more preferable such as a chair or a shelf from a wall or its likes of that which will be elevated from the ground. And if he were to place it on the ground for a need without the intent to discredit it and placing it upon a clean surface of the ground due to a need for it such as if he was praying and he has nothing elevated to place it upon, or if he intended to perform sujood of tilaawah [i.e. recitation], then there is no sin in that in shaa Allah and I am unaware of any harm in that… ”
