Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“When Allah wants good for his slave, He hastens his punishment in the world. And when He wants bad for His slave, He withholds his sins from him until he appears before Him on the Day of Judgement.”

And with this (same) chain, (it was reported) from the Prophet (ﷺ) who said: “Indeed greater reward comes with greater trial. And indeed, when Allah loves a people He subjects them to trials, so whoever is content, then for him is pleasure, and whoever is discontent, then for him is wrath.”

Shaykh Bin Baaz rahimahullah, said while explaining this hadeeth:

“… Allaah holds back his sins from him to the extent the individual remains in a state of well-being concerning his body, wealth and in everything else up until Allaah takes him to account fully for his sins on the Day of Resurrection. We ask Allaah for safety – in such a case the punishment becomes more severe – wa la hawla wa la quwata illa billah”. End translation. [Reference]

Note: This is in relation to a person accumulating sins and not going through phases in life which erase for him his sins, as well as not making an effort to repent from those sins. For this person, such a threat in the hadeeth is feared for that individual. And Allaah knows best.
