Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If you want to put on your shoes, put on the right shoe first; and if you want to take them off, take the left one first. Let the right shoe be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off” [Agreed upon]
Hafidh Ibn Abdul-Barr (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “Whoever walks in one shoe or khuff or begins wearing his shoes from the left side, then he has done wrong and opposed the Sunnah….so blessings and all good is in following the etiquette of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and adhering to his command (ﷺ)” [at-Tamheed (18/182)]
Hafidh al-Iraaqi (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: “I say: it is necessary, if he begins wearing his shoe from the left side, to remove it and begin with the right in order to correct what occurred to him from opposition to the Sunnah. Qaadi al-‘Iyyad, an-Nawawi, and al-Qurtubi have recorded a consensus that this command [in the Hadith] is a recommendation and not an obligation” [Tarh ut-Tathreeb (8/432)]
