واختلفت عبارات العلماء في الحكمة في رفع اليدين فقال الشافعي – رضي الله عنه – : فعلته إعظاما لله تعالى واتباعا لرسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – وقال غيره : هو استكانة واستسلام وانقياد ، وكان الأسير إذا غلب مد يديه علامة للاستسلام ، وقيل : هو إشارة إلى استعظام ما دخل فيه ، وقيل : إشارة إلى طرح أمور الدنيا والإقبال بكليته على الصلاة ومناجاة ربه – سبحانه وتعالى – كما تضمن ذلك قوله : ( الله أكبر ) ، فيطابق فعله قوله ، وقيل : إشارة إلى دخوله في الصلاة وهذا الأخير مختص بالرفع لتكبيرة الإحرام ، وقيل غير ذلك ، وفي أكثرها نظر . والله أعلم .

“The wisdom behind raising the hands in prayer according to the people of knowledge is the veneration of Allah, surrendering to Him and following His Messenger.

Others said it signifies the beginning of our audience with Allaah while we put the world behind us.

Others said it is a sign the prayer has begun.

And some mentioned that it is a form of submission.

Al-Imam Nawawi rahimahullah mentions many of these opinions are problematic.”

Ash-Shaykh Sulaymaan ar-Ruhayli hafidaho-Allah mentions another reason that it is an adornment for the Salaat wherein the person recalls by it that he is in the prayer or that it is like a person tossing away from himself the trait of heedlessness and the Shaykh hafidaho-Allah mentions that it is not farfetched that all of the aforementioned reasons could be intended. However, the greatest of these reasons is that Allah loves this action and it is a means of establishing the servitude of Allah.
