Shaykh Abu Abdir Rahmaan Yahyaa Bin Alee Al-Hajooree was asked:

Question:

A person is fasting in Ramadan and then he is informed that he will undergo a difficult travel. So he makes the intention to break the fast; however, he does not eat anything. Then the appointment for the travel is delayed. Does he continue his fast or is he considered one who broke his fast and needs to make it up?

Answer:

“He continues his fast. The evidence for that is what is established

from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he was fasting a voluntary fasting. So he came to his family and said:

هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ مِنْ طَعَامٍ

Do you have any food?

And that was after the sun had rose.  So they said: “No”.  He (ﷺ) said:

إِنِّي صَائِمٌ

I am fasting

[Reported by Muslim (no. 1154 ), Abu Dawood (no. 2455), Nasaai (no. 2328,2330) and others]

So in this is evidence that the Prophet (ﷺ) wanted to break his fast if he found food and when he did not find food, he continued upon his fast”.
