Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Hizaam was asked:
What is the ruling in regards to the one that organizes a competition to teach the people the memorization of the quran for two months, and when it cumulates he holds an honour gathering (to honour the students) in front of the people between Maghrib and Isha. Then, after Isha, they have a large feast and spend money. Is this action legislated?
No proof has come in the Sunnah of our prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم for this action. How many from the companions and those who followed them used to memorize the Qur’an and they did not do that?
Gathering those who have finished memorizing the Quran and making them appear in front of the people is in opposition to the Sunnah and it is advised to leave it off. The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم did not do it nor his companions. Adding to that, it is a means of cultivating the people upon the Dunyaa, and loving to be seen (by others).
