Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah was asked:

Question:

[Regarding] this letter we received from Ali Sayyid Misri who works in Taif. he says in the letter, “What is the ruling on being a guest of a man whose wealth is mixed with haram and halal in terms of him working at a store that sells cigarettes? For example, and at the same time other things [having items] that are halal like books, cards, and pens and other than that. What is the ruling on that work? And in terms of this man giving gifts of some things, is it allowed to take it or reject it? Please give us the verdict for that. May Allah reward you.”

Answer:

“The ruling of the work of this man in this store is it is allowed. However, [this is] with the condition that he stays away from dealing with the prohibited [things] like usury, selling cigarettes, and other than that of what Allah prohibited so that his earnings can be halal and good…”
