Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen was asked:

Question:

“What is the ruling on wiping the hands on the face after dua?”

Answer:

“Wiping the face with the hands after dua is not prescribed because the Ahadith reported in that are weak. Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said, “they cannot be used to establish evidence. If we are not certain or most likely think this is not prescribed, then it is more deserving to be abandoned because legislation is not affirmed by pure opinion unless the opinion is most likely [i.e. something is correct]. So that which I see is that wiping the face with the hands after dua is not the Sunnah. The Prophet (ﷺ), as is well known, made dua in the Friday Khutbah for the rain prayer and raised his hands but it is not reported he wiped them on his face. Like that, in the number of ahaadith that have come from the Prophet (ﷺ) that he made dua and raised his hands, it is not affirmed that he wiped his face”. End translation. [Reference]
