Abdullah ibn Abbas radiallahu anhumma saw a man drinking zamzam water. So he said: Do you know how to drink zamzam water? He said: How do I drink zamzam water oh Ibn Abbas? He said: If you want to drink the zamzam, then pull a bucket of it, then face the qiblah and say: Bismillah. Breathe three times while drinking and drink until you are full. Then say:

Oh Allah I ask you for beneficial knowledge, spacious provisions, and cure from every disease”

In terms of this narration of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported by Daraqutni, then yes it has more than one chain of narration as found in Musannaf Abdurrazzaq (no. 9111) and al-Faakihi in Akhbaar Makkah (no. 1107). As for the first narrator ( هدية بن عبد الوهاب الكلبي), then he is not a weak narrator. Hafidh Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy upon him) mentioned in Taqreeb Tahtheeb that he is Sadooq but makes mistakes. However, he mentions in Tatheeb at-Tahtheeb that Ibn Abi ‘Asim declared him to be Thiqah (reliable) [Tahtheeb Tahtheeb (9/276)]. Also, Imam adh-Dhahabi (may Allah have mercy upon him) declared him to be Thiqah (reliable) in al-Kaashif (3/433)]. So for those reasons, Shaikh al-Albani (may Allah have mercy upon him) used to authentic the narrations with (هدية) in the chain of narration, such as Hadith (no. 2404) in Sunan Ibn Majah.

As for the speech mentioned that one simply needs an intention in the the heart before drinking Zamzam, then this is correct in that Scholars explain the Hadith to mean that if one has a need/intention and drinks Zamzam, then in shaa Allah the need will be fulfilled by Allah. However, if someone supplicates after drinking Zamzam, as based on the above narration of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and the practice of many of the Salaf and Scholars, then it is also recommended and legislated.
