On the authority of Abu Hurayra, رضي الله عنه، that The Prophet, صلى الله عليه وسلم، said:

أَبْخَلُ النَّاسِ الَّذِي يَبْخَلُ بِالسَّلاَمِ

“The most miserly of people is the one who is miserly about giving salaams.”

Reported by at-Tabaraani fil Awsat. Graded authentic by al-Imaam Albany rahimahullah.

Al-Imam As-Sana’nee rahimahullah commented on this hadith by saying:

لأنه بخل بأسهل الأقوال وما لا ضرر عليه فيه أصلاً

“Reason [for this ruling] is because he has become miserly with one of the most easiest of statements and of that which there is no harm upon him whatsoever.” End quote. [at-Tanweer Sharhu al-Jaami’ as-Sageer]

Note: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was indeed truthful when he said:

وَأَىُّ دَاءٍ أَدْوَأُ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ

“There is no worse disease than miserliness.”

[Graded authentic by Shaykh Muqbil rahimahullah in his book as-Saheeh al-Munsad].
