Great Reward Of Dhikr After Wudhu

‘Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه Reported, The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

“Whoever performs ablution perfectly and then he says:

أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له وأشهد أن محمداً عبده ورسوله اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين

Ash-Hadu An Laa Ilaaha Illallaahu Waḥdahoo Laa Shareeka Lahoo Wa Ash-Hadu Anna Muḥammadan ‘Abduhoo Wa Rasooluh Allaahumma-Ja’alnee Min at-Tawwabeena Waj’Alnee Min al-Mutaṭahhireen

(I bear witness there is none worthy of worship except Allāh alone without any partners, and I bear witness Muḥammad is his servant and his Messenger. O Allāh, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.)

If he says this, then the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him and he may enter through whichever he wishes.”

Do not Miss this Golden Chance

The hadeeth was reported by Muslim v.1 pg. 209 no.(234), without the addition:

‘اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين’

Allaahumma-Ja’alnee Min at-Tawwabeena Waj’Alnee Min al-Mutaṭahhireen

O Allāh, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves.

This increase to the dua (Supplication) was added by the Shaykh of at-Tirmidhi; Muhammad bin Ja’far ath-Thalabi, who opposed all of the other reporters who narrated this hadeeth.

Since none of the other narraters of this hadeeth ascribed this dua to the Messenger ﷺ.

A group of the people of knowledge have shed light on this error. Ash-Shaykh Ahmed Shakir – may Allaah have mercy on him – stated in his checking of ‘Sunan at-Tirmidhi’ (1/83):

“In all of the narrations that we have quoted, there is no mention in them of his statement:

اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين’

Allaahumma-Ja’alnee Min at-Tawwabeena Waj’Alnee Min al-Mutaṭahhireen

Except in the report (mentioned) by at-Tirmidhi only. And this is not sufficient in (claiming) its authenticity due to what you have come to know of confusion and error present in it (i.e. the previous supplication).”

Seeing as the previous addition to the dua is not authentically affirmed after a person performs Wudhū, they should only recite the authentic portion of the which ends at:

…Wa Ash-Hadu Anna Muḥammadan ‘Abduhoo Wa Rasooluh

…and I bear witness Muḥammad is his servant and his Messenger.

And Allaah knows best.
