Imam Al Albaani said:

ليس هناك دليل في الشرع يخبرنا أن أجساد الشهداء لا تفنى كأجساد الأنبياء ، عندنا نص أن الله عز وجل حرّم على الأرض أن تأكل أجساد الأنبياء . مثل هذا النص بالنسبة للشهداء لا يوجد إطلاقا ؛ لكن الذي وقع أن في التاريخ الإسلامي الأول بسبب حفريات اكتشفوا جثت بعض الشهداء كماهي . هذا صحيح وقع ، لكن هذا لا يعطينا قاعدة أولا : أن كل شهيد لا يبلى جسده ، بل قد وجدت بعض الأجساد لغير الشهداء وهذا كما قلت أنها بيجوز يكون إما أمر يعود إلى طبيعة الأرض أو أن الله عز وجل العليم بأحوال الموتى فقد يكرم بعضهم بأن يبقي جسده كما كان في قيد الحياة ، تكون كرامة من الله لذاك الإنسان سواء كان شهيدا أو كان صالحا غير شهيد.

لكن لا يجوز أن نأخذ من ذلك قاعدة فلا نقول على الله مالا نعلم . نقول : إن الله حرّم على الأرض أن تأكل أجساد الأنبياء . أما غير الأنبياء فلا دليل عندنا بأن أجسادهم تبقى .

“There is no proof in the legislation which informs us that the bodies of the martyrs do not deteriorate like the bodies of the prophets. We have a text that Allah aza wa Jal prohibited the land from eating the bodies of the prophets, a text similar to this in regards to the martyrs is not found at all. However, that which has occurred in the Islamic history, firstly due to the graves [being exposed], revealing the bodies of some of the martyrs being in the same state [they were in when buried]. Although it is correct that this has occurred, this does not give us a principle firstly that every martyr’s body does not deteriorate. Rather, some of the bodies of other than the martyrs have been found like this, and this, as I said, is possible either due to the nature of the land or that Allah aza wa Jal is the one who is aware of the situations of the dead ones. He may honour some of them by letting their bodies remain as it was during their life. Thus, it is an honour from Allah for that person, whether it was a martyr or a righteous person who wasn’t a martyr.

But it is not permissible that we create a new principle [based on that]. Thus, we do not say about Allah that which we do not know. We say that indeed Allah prohibited the earth from eating the bodies of the prophets. As for other than the prophets, then we do not have any proof that their bodies remain.” End quote.
