عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ أَحَبَّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم الْقَمِيصُ .
Narrated Umm Salamah:
“The most beloved clothing to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was the Qamis.” [Reported by Abu Dawud and at-Tirimidhi. Graded saheeh by Shaykh Albany rahimahullah.]
Note: Al-Imam An-Nawawi rahimahullah mentioned the aforementioned hadith under the chapter استحباب القميص (Wearing a Qamis is recommended). Ash-Shaykh Bin Baz rahimahullah commented by saying the Qamis that is being referred to in the hadith is what is commonly worn [the Shaykh began to point to the thawb he had on as an example].
Also, Ash-Shaykh Abdul Muhsin al-Abbaad hafidahullah comments on the hadith saying it is the best of clothing since it is more complete in concealing the body in comparison to other types of clothing.

“عن أم سلمة رضي الله عنها قالت:
كَانَ أَحَبُّ الثِّيَابِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْقَمِيص
رواه الترمذي”
“Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the most beloved garment to the Prophet (ﷺ) was the qamees.” [Reported in Tirmidhi]
Imam Shawkani (may Allah have mercy upon him) said, “The Hadith proves the recommendation of wearing the qamees. Verily it was the most beloved clothing to the Prophet (ﷺ) because it is more capable of covering the body than the rida (upper garment) and izar (lower garment) which are in need of tightening and other then that, unlike the qamees” End translation. The word Qamis comes in the Quran six times in a context showing that the clothing that Prophet Yusuf alahyis salaam was known to wear was the Qamis. As we know, Yusuf alahyis salaam was from the lineage of Bani Israel and he wasn’t from the lineage of the Arabs. Likewise, it was known from the Greek and other non Arab countries that they took the Qamis as part of their clothing. It is very strange to hear this new doubt nowadays, “This Qamis is just the clothing of the Arabs, it has nothing to do with Islam”
Here is the definition of Mustahab:
“ما يثاب فاعله ولا يأثم تاركه”
“What a person gets a reward for and doesn’t get a sin if he leaves it off”
