Abu Hurairah radiallahu anhu said that the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said”

نِعْمَ سَحُورُ الْمُؤْمِنِ التَّمْرُ

How excellent a Suhur for the Believer is Dates

[Saheeh Sunan Abi Dawood no. 2345]

Mulla Ali Qaari rahimahullah wrote:

قال الطيبي : وإنما مدح التمر في هذا الوقت لأن في نفس السحور بركة ، وتخصيصه بالتمر بركة ، على بركة إذا أفطر أحدكم فليفطر على تمر ، فإنه بركة ، ليكون المبدوء به والمنتهى إليه البركة

“at-Tiybi said: Verily dates are praised at this time because the suhur itself is a blessing and specifying it with dates is a blessing upon a blessing. So if anyone of you breaks fast with dates, then it is a blessing. So his starting with it and ending with it becomes a blessing”

Shaikh Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbad hafidhuhallah:

وهذا يدل على أن التسحر بالتمر ممدوح؛ لأن (نعم) هذه من صيغ المدح كما هو معلوم

“And this indicates that eating dates for suhur is praiseworthy because the word (نعم) is from the wordings of praise as is well known”
