Question:

How do you reconcile between the hadeeth regarding not praying during sunset, and the two Sunnah prior to Salaatul Maghrib?

Answer:

The Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said:

صلو قبل المغرب صلوا قبل المغرب قال في الثالثة لمن يشاء

Pray before Maghrib, pray before maghrib. He said at the third time: for whoever wants”

(Saheeh al-Bukhari)

Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:

الشيخ: نعم هناك سنة قبل صلاة المغرب لكنها بعد آذان المغرب لأن ما قبل الآذان وقت نهي لكن هذه السنة لما أمر بها النبي صلي
الله عليه وسلم وكرر الأمر بها ثلاثة مرات فقد يظن المخاطب أن هذه السنة واجبة أو أنها على الأقل سنة راتبة كالتي بعد المغرب فلهذا قال عليه الصلاة والسلام لمن شاء لئلا يظن أنها واجبة أو سنة راتبة ولهذا قال الراوي كراهية أن يتخذها الناس سنة أي سنة راتبة

“Yes, there is a Sunnah before maghrib. However, (the Sunnah before Maghrib is done) after the adhan of maghrib. What is before maghrib is the prohibited time. However, when the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam ordered this Sunnah and repeated the affair three times, the one addressed may think that this Sunnah is an obligation or it is less than the Raatibah Sunnah after Maghrib.
So like that the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam said, “for whoever wants”. So like that narrator said: out of dislike that the people take it as a Sunnah: i.e. a Sunnah Raatibah…”
