Question:

Is placing the index finger in the ear while giving the Athan from the Sunnah?

Answer:

“The narration of the one giving the Athan placing his fingers in his ears has routes which combined are suitable to be used as evidence. Thus based upon that it is from the Sunnah that the Muathin places his fingers in his ears while giving the Athaan.” End translation. [Kanzuthameen 2/349]

قيل: إنه يلتفت يميناً لـ: (حي على الصلاة) في المرتين جميعاً، وشمالاً لـ: (حي على الفلاح) للمرتين جميعاً. وقال بعضهم: يلتفت يميناً لـ: (حي على الصلاة) في المرة الأولى، وشمالاً للمرة الثانية، و (حي على الفلاح) يميناً للمرة الأولى، وشمالاً للمرة الثانية ليعطي كل جهة حظَّها من: (حي على الصلاة) و (حي على الفلاح)، ولكن المشهور وهو ظاهر السنة أنه يلتفت يميناً لـ: (حي على الصلاة) في المرتين جميعاً، وشمالاً لـ: (حي على الفلاح) في المرتين جميعاً، ولكن يلتفت في كل الجملة وما يفعل بعض المؤذنين أنه يقول: (حي على) ثم يلتفت لا أصل له.

Shaykh al Uthaymeen mentions what is famous and the apparent sunnah is that he turns to the right both times for حي على الصلاة and to the left both times for حي على الفلاح. Also this should be done during the whole statement, unlike what some do of saying حي على and then they starting to turn, whereas one should say those statements while turning.
