Allah says:
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
“And live with them honourably” [4:19]
Imam as-Sa’di (d. 1376 H.), may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “This includes good dealings in actions and statements. So it is upon the husband to treat his wife honorably, in terms of good companionship, and holding back from harm and doing good [towards her]…” End. [Tafseer as-S’adi (pg. 172)]
Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (d. 1421 H.), may Allah have mercy upon him, said in regards to a man who often threatens to divorce his wife:
“I advise a man not to mention divorce to his wife because divorce is the most detested thing to a woman. It is the most detested thing to her. If you say such words [i.e. you are divorced if you do not do such and such], and you train your tongue to do so, perhaps she will detest you and it will cause bad dealing between you and her. These words should not come from your tongue with your wife no matter how angry you get. If it is decreed that you get angry, then there is a word which cures this. What is it? I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytaan the accursed…”. End. [Fatawaa al-Haram an-Nabawi-Tape no. 37-Side A]
