When some of the Salaf heard the statement of Allaah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنتُمْ سُكَارَىٰ حَتَّىٰ تَعْلَمُوا مَا تَقُولُونَ

O you who believe! Approach not As-Salat when you are in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter.

[An-Nisa: 43]

They said:

“How many a worshipper (who performs prayer) has not drunk Alcohol, yet does not know what he is saying (in his prayer), (rather) he has been intoxicated by the Dunya and its worries”.
