The following is a translation of an audio of Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-Uthaymeen which was recorded about fifteen days before his death, rahimahullah:
The broadcaster:
A female questioner asks what is the ruling of a woman travelling [abroad] without a mahram for the purpose of teaching, and is it a condition for the permissibility of the journey that the mahram remains with her?
Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-Uthaymeen:
Repeat the question.
It is impermissible for a woman to travel without a mahram, whether it be for the purpose of teaching (abroad) or to perform Hajj or Umrah. [This is] due to the statement of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa salam) when he was delivering a sermon to the people: “A woman should not travel except with a Mahram.” A man stood up and asked, “O Messenger of Allah! My wife has gone for Hajj while I am enlisted for such and such a battle, what should I do?”, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied, “Go and join your wife in Hajj.” Naam.
Broadcaster:
[Another] questioner says…
Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-Uthaymeen:
And at this point this blessed session ends. We ask Allah to return me and you along the people of goodness and that He [i.e. Allah] takes our souls while being upon the state of Islam and that He makes us from the callers of goodness and amongst the allies to the truth for verily He is All-Capable of everything.
