Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah was asked:

Question:

What is the ruling on an Imam imitating one of the reciters in his recitation?

Answer:

It is allowed to imitate one of reciters in his recitation as long as the reciter which he imitates is good. As for the voice, then he does not imitate it”

[Majmoo’ al-Fatwa wa Rasaail (15/88-89)]

Shaikh Al-Albani rahimahullah was asked:

Question:

What is the ruling on imitating the voices of reciters?

Answer:

By Allah, I do not find an answer for something like this question, except his statement sallahu alayhi wa salam:

أنا وأمتي براءٌ من التَّكلف

Me and my Ummah are free from Takaluf (unnecessary burden)

This is one [affair]. The other is that it is feared that this will lead to fitnah and the origin of recitation is forgotten; the origin will become imitating. I am reminded when asked this question of the Khateebs who imitated in their khutbah’s Kashak. His name is Kashak? Kashak al-Misri. So it was apparent in them complete takaluf (unnecessary burden). In the Book of Allah, It is more superior and high for the people to imitate in it.

The last thing is his statement sallahu alayhi wa salam:

أحسن الناس قراءة مَن إذا سمعتموه يقرأ رأيتموه يخشى الله

The person with the best recitation is the one who when you hear him, you think he fears Allah

Those who imitate those [reciters] are not from this”

[Fatawa al-Judda no. 4]

Shaikh Muqbil rahimahullah said;

That which what we advise is not to imitate because a person will be busy from pondering over the Quran. And Allah says:

أَفَلا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ أَمْ عَلَى قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَا

Do they not then think deeply in the Quran, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)?

[47:24]

He will busy himself with imitating the voice of so and so. And greater than this if a person is capable of imitating and continuing in the recitation of the verse until its end and another has some weakness. He is not capable. So sometimes he will burden himself unnecessarily and sometimes harm himself. However, it does not reach the level of prohibition. However, that which we advise is not to imitate…”

Shaikh Bin Baz rahimahullah said:

As for imitating a voice (of one whom) he is amazed by and it makes him fear Allah, then there is no harm in a person imitating the voice of a person. It is not mocking and play. However, (this is on the condition that) he sees this to be more fearful for the heart and beneficial, then there is no harm.

Also al-Muhadith, Ash-Shaykh Muqbil, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked about listening to the recitations of some of the people of desires, so he, may Allah have mercy upon him, replied by saying:

يستفاد من قراءة الصالحين السلفيين، ومن هو مستور حال لا بأس بسماع قراءته الطيبة، وأما من علم بالبدعة فإن سماع قراءته قد يجلب الاغترار به فلا ينصح بذلك

“The recitations of the righteous salafis are to be benefited from , as for the one who his condition is unknown then it is okay to listen to his good recitation and as for the one who is known for bidah then listening to his recitation can cause him in being deceived by him therefore that is not advised…”
