Ash-Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked the following question:

Question:

Some of the youth unfortunately are ignorant of the conditions of those who have deviated, to the degree some of them began not to accept the tapes of raduud or show any attention to this topic (of refutations) due to the claim “seek knowledge, seek knowledge because the speech against the people of falsehood preoccupies one from studying”, so what is your comment on this, may Allah bless you.

Answer:

“The one who says this is an ignoramus, knowing the people of innovations is from seeking knowledge, it is from seeking knowledge to know ahlul bid’a and to be aware of them…”

Ash-Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalee, may Allah preserve him, was asked the following question

Question:

There is a statement that refutations between the people of knowledge distracts one from seeking knowledge, so is this statement correct?

Answer:

This is from the doubts of (the people) of falsehood, I doubt that the like of this statement would be spread by one who has a small amount of knowledge because the books of refutations are available distributed, published and being read (by the people) from the early eras to this era… so the books of refutations is Jihaad in the path of Allah rather Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, considered refutations upon the people of innovations and the people of desires to be greater than Jihaad of the battle field… so if this statement comes from one who is ignorant then it is a must that he be taught and if it comes from an individual that claims knowledge then he is either an ignoramus that thinks he knows or either a person of deception who [the people] must be aware of and should be warned from”

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him, was asked the following question:

Question:

What is your opinion of the one who says that the books of refutations harden the heart?

Answer:

“No, (leaving it) is that which hardens the hearts, meaning the people living upon error and misguidance hardens the heart, as for respecting the truth and refuting the baatil, falsehood then this is from that which softens the hearts, with no doubt, yes.”

~ Abu Fajr AbdulFattaah bin Uthman

From that which is known is that the scholars wrote books, volumes in which they spoke about men regarding whether they were upright or not. If they didn’t pay attention and give concern to these books and refute the innovators and those whom were not trustworthy, then the hearts would have been hardened due to people taking knowledge from those innovators or not knowing authentic from weak, and thus hardening their hearts by acting upon weak and fabricated narrations. An example of this is what I translated a while back

Ash Shaykh Yahya mentions in his commentary of رسالة في بيان مالم يثبت فيه حديث من الأبواب of Imam Al Fayruzaabaadi [View Here]

“Ibn Al Jawzi mentioned in his Mawdu’at (870): The narration that there will be in my nation a man (upon whom) it will be said to him: ‘Muhammad Ibn Idrees, he is more harmful upon my nation then Iblees, and Abu Hanifa the lamp of my nation!’, then this narration is fabricated (may Allah curse be upon the one who fabricated it and this cursing does not skip one of the two and they are: Ma’mun and al Juwaybaari [two narrators of this narration]. In both of them there is no deen and no goodness’ ” [the link for the book can be found here]

Continuing with Imam Ibn Jawzi’s speech, he said that “they both used to fabricate narrations and ibn hibban said: Ma’mun used to be a man from the two men who narrated from whom he never saw, and Al Juwaybaari used to be a liar, and a dajjal. He fabricated narrations upon those he narrated from that which they didn’t narrate to him, and as such it is not permissible to mention him in the books except by way of disparaging him” This addition was taken from the commentary of Ash Shaykh Abu Amr of the book al khulas fi marifatil hadaeeth of Imam At Teebiee, page 162, print darul athaar
