Ash-Shaykh Bin Baaz, rahimahullah, was asked the following question:
Q: What is the ruling on people who gather at the place where Sadaqah (voluntary charity) is being distributed, raise their hands on it as one offers Du`a’ (supplication) for the donor while others pronounce Ta’min (saying: “Amen” after reciting Du`a’) aloud?
A: This should not be done in this way, for it is an act of Bid`ah (innovation in Islam). However, supplicating for the person who gives – without raising one’s over the given money, gathering, or raising one’s voice as you described – is permissible, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Anyone who does you a favor, requite them, but if you are unable to do this, go on making Du`a’ for them until you are sure that you have adequately requited them. (Related by Abu Dawud and Al-Nasa’y with a good chain of transmitters). May Allah grant us success.
Ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al- Uthaymeen, rahimahullah, was asked the following question:
سؤال: يتصدق إنسان من أجل أن يدعو له هذا الإنسان.
[What is the ruling on] an individual [who] gives sadaqah in order that the person makes du’a for him?
الشيخ: حتى هذا أيضًا نقص في الإخلاص،
“Even this is still a form of deficiency in one’s ikhlaas
قال الأبرار: ﴿إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لا نُرِيدُ مِنْكُمْ جَزَاءً وَلا شُكُوراً﴾ [الإنسان:9]
The pious have said:
“We only feed you for Allah’s sake; we desire from you neither reward nor thanks)
والدعاء من الجزاء؛ لقول النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: ((من صنع إليكم معروفًا فكافئوه، فإن لم تجدوا ما تكافئوه فادعوا له)).
And dua is from the ways of recompensing [someone], due to the statement of the Prophet, alayhi salaatu was-salaam:
“whoever does a favor for you then reward him, and if you cannot, make dua for him”
ولا شك أن هناك فرقًا بين الإنسان يعطي لله -عزَّ وجلَّ- يريد التقرب إلى الله -عز وجل-، وبين إنسان يقول: أعطيه من أجل أن يدعو لي. فرقٌ بعيد.
And with no doubt there is a difference between a person who gives for Allah’s sake, and intending to get closer to Allah azza wajal, and between a person who says ‘I shall give him so that he can make du’a for me’. There is a big difference”

The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Ash-Shaykh Abdul-Azeez Aali Shaykh, was asked the following:
Oh Eminent Shaykh Abdulaziz, what is the ruling on giving sadaqah so it will be said to the one being given “make du’a for me that I be successful in life” [i.e. The one giving is asking for dua to be made for himself]
Allah, The Most High, described his believing servants with His statement:
وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللَّهِ لا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَاء وَلا شُكُورًا
“And they give food, inspite of their love for it, to Miskin [poor], the orphan, and the captive,. [Saying]: “We feed you seeking Allah’s Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you.”
[Surah al-Insaan, verse # 8-9]
The person giving sadaqah should give it for Allah’s sake. As for him saying afterwards: “make du’a for me”, then that makes it seem that he only gave it for this reason which becomes a form of exchange only. However, the Muslim should not do so. Rather, he should donate wealth to those deserving of it, while hoping for what is with Allah for verily it better than the worldly affairs. He hopes for what is with Allah:
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا
“Verily, We fear from our Lord a Day, hard and distressful, that will make the faces look horrible (from extreme dislikeness to it).”
[Surah al-Insaan, verse # 10].
And Allah, said:
فَوَقَاهُمُ اللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّاهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا
“So Allah saved them from the evil of that Day, and gave them Nadratan (a light of beauty) and joy.”
[Surah al-Insaan, verse # 11]
