Question:

Does this mean we are not allowed to pay for a gym membership, since we are paying a compensation for it?

Answer:

The Shaikh is referring to a reward that is taken like in weight lifting competitions or shows etc. A person should not take a prize/wage for it nor compete to take a wage for it. It is for exercise and strength. He should not take money for it.

It is not referring gym memberships, although it is advised not to attend these gyms due to the great fitnah present there.
