The Takbeerat After The Prescribed Prayers Are Not Obligatory

Shaikh Bin Baz rahimahullah was asked:

Question:

He asks in one of the questions about the Takbeer after the five prayers in the days of Tashreeq: is it obligatory or recommended? If it is obligatory or recommended, did the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam do it or is it from the actions of the Companions may Allah be pleased with them?

Answer:

[…] So Takbeer is legislated and it is not obligatory, however Sunnah in the day of Arafah, day of Nahr, and the days of Tashreeq, generally and specifically after the prayers and in the remaining time of the night or the day. The Takbeer is legislated[…]

However, the Ahnaaf consider these Takbeer obligatory, which is not correct.

“Two of the Four Imams agreed that the Takbeer after the five prayers on the days of Eid is Sunnah. The Hanafiyyah said it is obligatory not Sunnah. The Malikiyyah say it is recommended not Sunnah”.

The Evidence for the Takbeerat of Eid after the Prayers

Shaikh al-Albani rahimahullah  said:

“It is authentic upon Ali may Allah be pleased with him:

That he used to make Takbir from after fajr prayer on the day of Arafah until asr of the last day of the days of Tashreeq. He made takbir after ‘asr

It was reported by Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/1/2) with two routes one of them is Jayyid”.

[Irwaa al-Ghalil (3/125)]

These Takbeerat are done after the Obligatory Prayers whether in congregation or alone.

Imam Ibn Qudama rahimahullah said:

“Issue: Then he does not cease to make takbeer after the prescribed prayers that he prays in congregation. It is reported from Abu Abdilah (Imam Ahmad), may Allah have mercy upon him, that he makes takbeer for the obligatory prayer even if he is alone until he makes takbir after asr prayer on the last days of the Tashreeq. Then he stops. It is legislated according our Imam, may Allah have mercy upon him, to make takbir after the obligatory prayers in congregation according to what is well-known from him. Al-Athram said: I said to Abu Abdillah: I take the action of Ibn Umar that he made Takbir even if he prays alone? Ahmad said: yes. Ibn Mas’ud said: Verily the takbir is for the one who prays in congregation…On the authority of Ahmad, may Allah have mercy upon him, from another version that he made takbir after the obligatory prayer even if he is alone. It is the mathab of Malik because remembrance is recommended for the one who misses some part of the prayer. So it is recommended for the one who prayed alone like the greeting”

[al-Mughni (2/127)]

The Takbeerat should be done after the Remembrances of the Prayer

Shaikh Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wad’iee rahimahullah said:

“As for what the people usually due on the days of Tashreeq after the prayer where they make takbeer, then this is not legislated. Rather Takbir is general, what I mean, you begin after the prayer with the legislated remembrances which are said after the prayer then you make takbir whether after the prayer or at duha time or in the middle of the day or end of the day or the middle of the night”.

[Qama ul-Mu’aanad pg. 366]

Each Person Should Recite the Takbir individually

Shaikh Ibn ul-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:

“And what is legislated after the prayers is to do the remembrances that are well-known and usual, then make takbir. Likwise, it is not legislated for the people to make takbir together, rather each makes takbir alone. This is legislated as comes in the Hadith of Anas that they were with the Prophet sallahu alayhi wa salam. So some of them recited la ilahi illa Allah and some of them would make takbir and they were not in one condition”
