Shaykh Bin Baaz, may Allah have mercy upon him, was asked the following question,

Question:

What is the ruling on cutting the beard, and cutting the hair that grows on the cheeks?

Answer:

Trimming the beard is not permissible due to the statement of The Prophet, sallahu alayhi wa salam, (as found) in the Saheeh hadeeth (trim your mustaches and leave your beards , oppose the Mushrikeen) (which) has been reported by Muslim in his Saheeh. The beard is that which grows on the cheeks and the chin, as clarified in the dictionary. So, it is a must to leave the hair that grows on the cheeks and the chin and not to shave it off nor to trim it. We ask Allah to rectify the state of the Muslims.

Ash-Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, may Allah preserve him, was asked the following question,

Question:

Is it permissible to shape up (i.e. lineup) the beard from the top and from the bottom?

Answer:

The beard has become something complicated (to deal with) for many of the people; they don’t know what to do with it. Why are you going to give it a shape up…(words unclear on the audio) If it is said (by some people that) it (i.e. the beard) is ruining the facial appearance, (why) should he keep it? (Know that verily) in it is a form of beauty, which beautifies you and adorns you, and it is that which distinguishes you from your sister and your mother. So, why has the beard become a problem for you? It has become something complicated to some of the people. (This is) since the Shaytan is the one who adorns for them these affairs; he makes them dislike the sunnah. Yes.
