عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما قال: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وجيوشه إذا علوا الثنايا كبروا وإذا هبطوا سبحوا

The Prophet (ﷺ) and his armies said: “Allah is Most Great” when they went up to high ground; and when armies said: “Allah is most Great” when they went up to high ground; and when they descended, they said: “Glory be to Allah.

Shaikh ibn Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:

تحت آداب السفر وما يقال فيه، فمن ذلك أنه من آداب السفر أنه إذا صعد الإنسان شيئا مرتفعا كالجبل وكذلك الطائرة إذا صعدت فإنه يكبر يقول: الله أكبر إما مرة أو مرتين أو ثلاثا وإذا نزل: سبح قال: سبحان الله مرة أو مرتين أو ثلاثا

Under the manners of travel and what is said in it, from that is if a person ascends something high like a mountain and likewise a plane if it ascends then he makes takbeer and he says: Allahu Akbar either once, twice  or three times. And if he descends he makes tasbeeh once, twice, or three times… [until he says]

أنك إذا صعدت تقول الله أكبر وإذا نزلت واديا تقول: سبحان الله كذلك الطائرة عند ارتفاعها تكبر عند نزولها المطار تسبح لأنه لا فرق بين الصعود في الهواء والنزول منه أو على الأرض والله الموفق

Verily if you ascend you say Allahu Akbar and if you descend a valley you say Subhan Allah and likewise the plane when it is lifting you make Takbir and when it descends at the airport you make tasbeeh because there is no difference between ascending in the air and descending from it or on the ground. Allah is the one who affirms.
