Ash Shaykh Saadiq Al Bayti was asked:

Question:

Is free mixing permissible in regards to the young ones? And when should separation between the two genders occur?

Answer:

The young ones of today will be the elders of tomorrow. Thus, they are made accustomed upon acts of obedience, and distanced from sins until they become accustomed to the acts of obedience and distanced from sins. Thus it is obligatory to separate between the two genders from the time of young age.

Ash Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:

The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said:

Command your children with the prayer whilst they are at the age of Seven, beat them (lightly, not leaving a mark) upon it whilst they are ten, and separate between them in the beds.

The prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم only commanded with separating between them in the beds, because the nearness of one of them from the other at the age of ten and that which is after that is a means for the occurrence of immorality due to the free mixing of the young boys and girls.

There is no doubt that them mixing in the stage of elementary [school] every day is a means to that, the same way as it is a means of free mixing to the latter stages [of life].

In any situation, the free mixing between the young boys and girls in the elementary stages is an evil act and not permissible to do due to that which occurs from it from evil. Indeed, the whole legislation has come with the obligation of cutting off the means which lead to Shirk [polytheism] and sins.
