Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Hizaam was asked:

Question:

A man entered the masjid on the Day of Jumu’ah while the mua’dhin is making the adhan. Does he follow (i.e. repeat) after the mua’dhin or does he pray two raka’ah of Tahiyyatul-Masjid?

Answer:

“What is closer [to the truth] is that if the muaadhin begins the adhan, then he should not deprive himself of the reward of repeating after the adhan. In this is a great reward as is well-known. The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered the one who enters the masjid to begin with the Tahiyyatul masjid due to what is in that of virtue. So like that, he begins with the repeating after the adhan and then prays two rak’aat so he does not deprive himself of the reward of repeating after the mua’dhin. If the mua’dhin did not begin, then he begins with the two raka’ah. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy upon him) was asked this issue and he answered saying that there is no harm that he repeats after the adhan and then prays two raka’ah. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy upon him) inclined to the opinion that he begins with repeating after the adhan”.
