The one who is listening to the Khutbah, can he detest another person who is listening to the Khutbah [by] using his hand?

How is the detesting of the hand done?

Answer:

An example of how to signal is the following:

عَنْ نَافِعٍ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، رَأَى رَجُلَيْنِ يَتَحَدَّثَانِ وَالإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَحَصَبَهُمَا أَنِ اصْمُتَا

Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar saw two men talking while the imam was giving the khutba on the day of jumua and he threw pebbles at them to tell them to be quiet

[Reported by Malik in his Muwatta no. 234 with a Saheeh chain]

Hafidh Ibn Abdul Barr rahimahullah said:

“In the narration is learning how to detest that [i.e. speaking during the khutbah]. It is not allowed to detest speech with speech in a time when speech is not allowed”

[al-Istithkaar(5/63)]

Imam Ibn Qudamah rahimahullah said:

“Chapter: If he hears a person speak, then he does not prohibit him with speech due to the Hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ):

When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have committed idle speech”

[Bukhari and Muslim].

However, he can signal to him as there is textual evidence that has come from Ahmad. So he can place his finger on his mouth. From those who took the opinion that one can signal during the Khutbah without speaking are Zaid ibn Suhaan, Abdurrahman ibn Abi Layla, Thawri, al-Awzaa’i, and Ibn Mundhir. Tawus disliked signaling [during the khutbah]
